Plans for a peaceful protest to support Webb City High School communication arts teacher Ashley Duke, who was placed on administrative leave last week after making a comment about the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk were squelched today by Webb City R-7 officials.
On her Facebook page, organizer McKenna Jade said the planned all-day protest, which was scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Central Office parking lot, was greeted this morning by school officials and a sizable number of Webb City police officers.
School officials said the protest couldn't be held there to protect students and learning, Jade said.
The law permits school officials to exclude protesters if they feel they would cause a disruption of school activities. Because of the importance of education, school buildings are treated differently by the law than other buildings.
Duke was removed from her classroom after posting the comment "I don't support what happened to Charlie Kirk. Charlie Kirk supported what happened to Charlie Kirk."
After the removal, district sources said Webb City High School students were pulled out of class to be interviewed about whether they had been indoctrinated by Duke.
