It's horrible that people...it's like they don't even realize he was a person, as soon as he's dead he's just something to be on the news, y'know?

Nickolaisen blasts media coverage of Irwin death
Diamond High School senior Michelle Nickolaisen, in the latest post on her Victim of Reality blog examines the media's coverage of the death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin:

Two things, the man lived his life in the public eye making a living by telling people wild animals weren't dangerous if you treated them with respect and care. Turns out he was wrong. So the irony factor of the "Croc Hunter's" death at the hands of stingray is right there. Secondly, there are only three people who die each year because of stingrays. So if this had been Joe Schmoe who got clipped by a pissy little sea creature, it still would have made the news. People need to realize the media didn't kill Steve Irwin, we're merely chronicling his death like we did with his life. No one seemed to have a problem with any aspect of our coverage of Irwin until it turned tragic.
P.S. There is no such thing as a freak accident. An accident by it's very nature is freakish, that's why it's an accident. In order for there to be a freak accident, there would have to be a common accident.
You know the old Ozarks saying, You Fool with a bull you are liable to get a horn up your rear...putting it mildly.
I for one am sick of seeing it on TV. His luck ran out, now bury him and lets move on.

The media coverage has not just focused on the actual incident, but also on the outpouring of grief from citizens all over the world. That is news, and it should be reported. RIP Steve Irwin
