In an editorial in today's edition, the Kansas City Star comes out strongly against Donayle Whitmore-Smith, Governor Matt Blunt's appointment to the State Board of Education:
The state education board does not have funding responsibilities for schools, but it makes annual budget recommendations to the General Assembly. It sets standards for teachers and administrators, accredits schools, and determines academic performance standards for districts. The governor only needs to look west to see what happens when people who aren't dedicated to public education seize control of a state education board. In Kansas, years of haggling over evolution, state science standards and sexuality education slowed down school improvements.

And now, if Whitmore-Smith wasn't enough, today he's appointed a KC charter school official to the state board!! See http://www.stltoday.com/ in the "Latest Headlines" section. Or check out the post on the Governor's press releases site.
UNBELIEVABLE!
