Bank firings featured in today's Globe

The firing of Mid-Missouri Bank President Scott Rosenthal and loan officer Kayla Muskrat and suspension of two other bank employees is chronicled in an article by Melissa Dunson in today's Joplin Globe.
The article essentially covers the same ground as the initial story on the subject, written by Joplin Tri-State Business Editor Jeff Wells and reporter Chris Roberts, which appeared four days ago on the Springfield Business Journal website.

There was nothing new in Melissa's story. I was hoping for more. What happened to the days when a reporter would be more aggressive in trying to get a quote from a reluctant source? Scott Rosenthal lives in Carthage; his address and phone number are listed. Why couldn't an ambitious reporter drive to Carthage and ring his doorbell?

Did you ever think that maybe a reporter did drive to Carthage and ring the doorbell and no one answered? Geez.

No, I didn't think that because the story did not say that. The story said, "Rosenthal and Muskrat did not return phone calls to the Globe on Monday." If the reporter had made the extra effort of ringing their doorbell, the story would have said so.

If any of you twerps rang my doorbell I'd release the hounds.

Reporters can't afford the gas to drive to Carthage.

Rosenthal doesn't live in Carthage any more. His ex wife does. His name may still be on the phone bill and in the book, but he's sure not going to answer the phone or front door there.

I think he lives in Webb City now.

This story has huge implications. I wish the Globe would dive in and do a lot more. For starters, at least three of the four are lifelong Joplin-area residents. When I was a student at MSSC, Scott Rosenthal was student body president.

When the case is being handled by the FBI, it is difficult to get much information. Most of what's being said is "hear-say"...at this point until there are charges filed....a reporter's hands are pretty tied.

Ben Bradlee to Bob Woodward: "Bob, what's up with this Watergate thing? Is it really just a third-rate burglary?"

Woodward: "I don't know, boss. No one will talk. Our hands are tied. I guess we'll just have to wait until the official word comes down."

Amazing. Comparing this little bank investigation to Watergate. I guess things will never change in little Joplin.

Anonymous said...

Of course it's not Watergate. But, I think it's substantially more than a "little bank investigation." It's a HUGE story for Joplin and deserves to be covered accordingly.

Anonymous said...

How do you know that it's a HUGE story when you don't know the facts?

Anonymous said...

I know that two local bank officials have been fired and two more have been suspended. And all four are well known in the Joplin community. That's more than enough to go on.

Anonymous said...

And those facts were reported so now what?

Anonymous said...

Exactly. The facts have been reported. And no investigation has been completed.

And kids, it's a private business, not a public entity. There is no legal reason the public HAS to know.

The people who have money in that bank would sure like to know what's going on.

Anonymous said...

And it has been reported by the bank that no customer accounts are involved in the investigation.

Anonymous said...

If you don't have money missing from your account...then why don't you just sit back and wait and see what happens.

If you don't like it, change banks.

Wonder if MSSU will still brag about Rosenthal being a graduate? Maybe he can go to work for the bunch that was running O'Sullivans? They seem like a nice bunch of people!

Anonymous said...

in my opinion, you should change banks. anyone that allows this stuff to go on....shouldn't be handling other people's money.

This is clearly not a thread of rational thought.

I'd argue that these people are innocent until proven guilty -- except for the fact that they haven't even been accused of anything!

I sure hope no reporters are chiming in on this thread. The irresponsibility is staggering.

These people ARE innocent until proven guilty. No facts are out and peoples names are being dragged through the mud.
Joplin will never change!!! REPORTERS, get the facts and then post names and pictures!

Let's be very careful before we jump to conclusions - there is a little too much joy in the air at seeing people fall from grace. If Kayla did anything wrong it was too have trusted Scott to protect her from whatever is falling out here. The Joplin banking community is highly incestuous and we will all know before too long what really went down. Scott is accused of being less than ethical over leaving SMB - but who could blame him for bettering his career? What is going on here is speculation and hearsay of the highest order - having said that I would agree with the other posters that there is something going on out in Greystone that smells - and its not just Oronogo. Look for Lisa ***** to be involved and Scott and Kayla trying to hard to bail her behind out of the fire. Two speculative cents but that is my guess.

What do you mean about Lisa? Lisa who? What does this have to do with the bank?
