The Joplin Globe, the same newspaper that considers anything Britney Spears does and Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction as page one stories, has not written anything about former Joplin High School student Asiah Epperson's quest for American Idol glory as far as I can determine.
It was announced during Tuesday night's program that Miss Epperson survived the cut to 50. Tonight, during a program scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Fox 14, we will find out if she makes it to the final 24. Still, I could find no mention of this ongoing saga in Miss Epperson's hometown newspaper...and I cannot recall any other stories about Miss Epperson.
The Globe has been quick to join the tabloid procession when it comes to Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and the like, and their horrific antics...you would think it would want to follow a more positive story about someone from its own backyard who is reaching for her dream on a show that is viewed by more than 20 million people, some of whom (though far fewer all the time) read the Joplin Globe.

Proof that the living room and dinner table have been taken over by the Hollywood story. No more personal interactions. No more caring about what the girl down the street is going to do tomorrow to make the world a better place. We live in a box (the boob-tube) and are content with that. And yet we wonder why other countries are stealing our jobs and their children are out performing ours in academics and career success. Turn off the tv and get off the couch!!! Put a little back into the work you do, even if that means writing a story about a local hometown ‘hero’ instead of stealing material from the AP.
You say "The Joplin Globe" has not mentioned Asiah Epperson. You DON'T bother to mention whether any other MEDIA outlet has had a single word to say about her.
I wonder: Have we heard anything from KODE, KSN, KOAM, or any other publications.
Don't leave "The Globe" alone in the mention of non-coverage IF all the other outlets have left us similarly uninformed!
I really can't see KODE or KSN directing viewers to a FOX program, especially during sweeps, that wouldn't seem smart. KOAM might, since they are sister stations, but I would not blame them if they didn't.
I believe that is why Randy isn't pointing that other MEDIA aren't reporting it. The Joplin Globe could only benefit from reporting on Asiah.
GOOD LUCK ASIAH!
Get on the ball Randy. Your favorite superintendent seems to be heading for Marshfield. Check the KY3 website.
Anon 1:18 is right. You haven't seen it on any other stations, so why aren't you crapping on them, too? Your lack of hesitation to slam the Globe makes your critiques of any media worthless.
To anonymous at 4:50 p.m., I was on the ball with the Mark Mayo story. I ran it two days ago and will have another item about it on the blog in just a little bit.
As for the Globe apologists who are criticizing my lack of mention of the television stations, while I do think it is a legitimate news story for any of them, I see American Idol as competition, especially for Nexstar stations and can understand their reluctance to hype the competition. The Globe has no such excuse and has missed an early chance to pounce on this story, though Asiah's success tonight leaves the door open for a late entrance.
This new system of moderating comments takes some time to get used to. Many times I see the comments out of order and this is one of those times. Anonymous at 4:50 p.m. explained my reasoning better than I did. The Globe should be all over this story.
Perhaps the Globe can't get any information. Fox probably has strict confidentiality rules. So what would the Globe do then? Speculate and offer information available elsewhere? Oh, wait, that's what they do everyday.
