Probable cause statement: Three-year-old victim had brain injuries, bruising, laceration

A probable cause statement filed today in Jasper County Circuit Court indicates three-year-old Jonathan Munoz-Bilbrey suffered head injuries, bruises and a laceration when he was brought to Mercy Hospital Friday. The boy died Sunday at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

The person who was supposed to be providing care to him at the time he was abused was Leonard Valdez, 21, who is is jail in lieu of $150,000 cash only bond on a felony child abuse charge.

The Kansas City Police arrested Valdez Friday after the JPD investigation determined there was probable cause and the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed the charge.

Jonathan Munoz-Bilbrey's death occurred exactly three weeks and one day after Valdez had been arrested for domestic assault at the same address, 1502 S. Michigan Avenue, where police say the child abuse took place. The victim was the boy's mother, Natasha Michelle Bilbrey, 22, according to the JPD incident report.

According to online Jasper County Circuit Court records, if Valdez is able to post bond, he is not to have any contact with the boy's family nor with any child under age 17.

The redacted probable cause is printed below:

I am wondering if they will charge the mother with anything. On October 21st she had the opportunity to rid her life of that man when he was arrested for abusing her. Instead she chose to let him back into her apartment and not only that but left him alone with her child and gave him the opportunity to abuse that child which resulted in the baby's death. She should be held liable to some extent. I am wondering if there are any other children in the home?
Why don't these young mothers learn not to leave their children with just anyone? This kind of thibg is becoming all too common.
I am saddened for the death of that innocent little boy. Disgusted by the sickness of the man who killed him. Angered about a mother who would bring and allow an abuser to stay in the home.
She is responsible for that child's death since she is the one who put him in "harm's way"

@5:47 Totally agree. Savage animalistic behavior, no better than big cats or bears. Males killing other males offspring and the female let's him mate as soon as he's done. I know that is not exactly the case here, but not far off at all.

Who manages 1502 Michigan apartments??? More questions need to be asked of them about their policies and lack of action in protecting their community. They have more culpability as a third-party to this heinous act than anyone else. The complex has a sign posted that states they are part of JPD's Multi-Family Crime Free program yet allowed this guy back on their property after he assaulted their resident on-site 3 weeks ago! 1502 Management has the authority to trespass him from their property and put safeguards in place to deter an innocent child's death. Instead, their inaction promoted a dangrous environment that proved to be deadly.

If he assaulted her 3 weeks ago at her apartment, the apartment manager should of stepped up and helped her. But instead they gave him the opportunity to kill this child. They should be ashamed of themselves. DISGUSTING!!

These are very good points. This information is publicly available:
Dominium Management (www.dominiumapartments.com) is the Management Company.
Tarren Latham is listed as Community Manager.

I know that Koby the manager was a pitbull about crime at 1502. when i lived at 1502 a few years ago i was given an expedited eviction notice after me and my exbf got into a fight in the apt and he was arrested. A pink trespass notice with my exbf name was put up on all the buildings. it was really embarassing and the only way i could keep my apt was to file a restraining order against my ex-bf which i did. I understand now all that was done for my protection but why wasnt the same done for this girl and her little boy?!?!?!

You are right!!!!!! A few years ago the manager made me get a restraining order against my exbf for me to keep my apt. Why did i have to and this girl didnt? This smells more like discrimination and bad managment

QUESTION HOW DO YOU KNOW IF ITS A ONE TIME THING? IT CAN BE A ONE TIME THING IF YOU SNAP ! LET ME SAY I SHOULD KNOW I DID THE RESEARCH! SO DONT SAY THE MOTHER SHOULD BE HELD CULPABLE FOR THIS SCREWED UP CASE! HES GOING AWAY FOR KILLING AN INNOCENT BABY AND HE DESERVE EVERYTHING COMING TO HIM!AND THE APARTMENT MANAGEMENT SHOULD OF HELPED MORE BECAUSE IF THEY STEPPED IN THE BABY WILL STILL BE ALIEVE!

thats bcuz tarren latham is the manager now. she doesnt care about the residents at all and is a spineless dummy. shes made it clear she is more concerned with $$$ and not having a vacant apt than to keep her residents safe and to save a 3yr olds life. you dont have to look hard to see how she is wrapped up with all the bullshit here and has lost control. you never see her outside the office unless she and her partner-in-crime, the maint man smiley wiley will sneak over to building 1 to fratenize with there favorites. this place has gone down hill fast the last 6 months and it has to be near rock bottom when a child is murdered on her watch.

You people make me sick. No one knows what really happened it will all come out in court. Instead of praying for this but you want him dead. What kind of people are you.. the mother is t to blame for all this she know what was going on in her home n did nothing about it. If someone was to hurt my baby his ass would of been gone but this girl was so hard up to keep a man around she let this happened. What kind of mother does that make her. This boy has to live with what has happened but to wish death on him makes you a monster
