Emergency designation for Parkwood Tournament plan to lease, operate Joplin stadiums fails by one vote

Barring any unforeseen complications, the proposal from Parkwood Tournament, LLC to operate Joplin baseball stadiums seems likely to become a reality, but it will not happen on an emergency basis.

That idea was taken off the table Monday night when Joplin City Council failed to get the six votes necessary to pass a motion on an emergency basis.

The motion was approved by the majority of the council on a 5-4 vote but needed one more vote.

Voting in favor of the emergency measure were Mayor Ryan Stanley and council members Gary Shaw, Keenan Cortez. Phil Stinnett and Doug Lawson.

Casting the "no" votes were council members Diane Reid Adams, Chuck Copple, Anthony Monteleone and Christina Williams.

The proposal will now have to go through three readings, the normal procedure for council bills.

Under Parkwood Tournament's proposal, the company, which is headed by Mike Greninger, Bobby Landis and Don Patty would pay $55,000 a year to manage Joe Becker Stadium, Wendell Redden Stadium, Gabby Street Field and Bassman Softball Complex (pictured) for the next three years.

The stadiums would still be available for use by other teams, including the Joplin Outlaws.

City administration backs the proposal and said the emergency measure was necessary to allow Parkwood Tournament to begin scheduling tournaments for 2021.

Note that the Globe pulled a trick in its article on the meeting, only listing the council members who voted against it, no doubt so we wouldn't remember so easily the one who voted for it.

I find it a necessary news source, but it's highly incomplete, and as Randy has documented over the years a very biased one once that new editor in chief was installed and queried the then dreadful head of MSSU about what she could do for him. Which of course was to stop reporting on his subpar or worse activities, and exile the former reporter on that beat to something very mundane. Bad times, when three of our most important leaders when the tornado hit in 2011 were thugs.

Let's give Randy a chance to write his report on this vote and expose the names of everyone voting for the emergency that doesn't seem like anything like an emergency to some people.

Another under-handed criminally-minded deal, setup by contractors with kick backs to corrupt city leaders, with the Joplin taxpayers paying for the losses to the city.
