Probable cause: Intoxicated Carthage woman hits man over head with rock, beats him with broom

The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed second degree domestic assault charges today against a Carthage woman who allegedly hit a man over the head with rocks and beat him with a broom during a domestic disturbance Friday.

Hermelinda Garcia (DOB 1990) was formally arraigned this morning in Jasper County Circuit Court and pleaded not guilty. She is being held in the Jasper County Jail on $7,500 bond, cash or surety.

According to the probable cause statement, Garcia had come home intoxicated and was attempting to leave again when the victim she "needed to stay home for her kids and be safe."

Another person in the home captured the beginning of the incident on video, according to the statement.

{He} grabbed her by the hair in an attempt to stop her from walking. {She} turned around and began to slap {him} after a bit of talking. {She} slapped {the victim} multiple times in multiple parts of his body. {She} then bit {him} on the left arm near his wrist.

That was where the video ended, according to the statement.

He went inside the home into a bedroom, while she went into the yard and picked up a couple of rocks, the statement said. When she went into the bedroom, he told her he was trying to sleep.

The alleged victim said Garcia hit him twice in the head creating two gashes. Large spots of blood were left on the pillow and blanket.

The rocks were not the end of the assault, according to the probable cause statement.

After she was given her Miranda rights, Garcia told the Jasper County Sheriff's Office deputy she also hit the victim with a broom, which he noted in the statement.

"I observed a bent and dented broom on the porch of the residence."
