Board delays decision on new member until May 26 meeting

The Joplin R-8 Board of Education will not have a new member tonight.

After three and a half hours interviewing 11 candidates and conducting a first round vote, the board tabled the election until its next meeting.

During the first vote, each board member nominated a candidate, with multiple board members permitted to nominate the same candidate. Three board members, President Jeff Koch, Debbie Fort, and Jennifer Martucci nominated former board member Jim Kimbrough, with two, Vice President Lynda Banwart and Randy Steele nominating Empire District Electric Company attorney Sharrock Dermott, and Mike Landis nominating Marsi Archer, a chemistry professor at Missouri Southern State University.

According to the rules, all candidates still remain in the running for the position. During the second round, each board member will vote for two of them. The two candidates with the most votes will move on to the next round of voting, and all others will be eliminated.

In the third round, each board member votes for one of the remaining two candidates.

If no one has a majority, another vote is taken until the matter is decided.

My question is, where were these people before election time? Why didn't they run when we needed candidates?
It's nice to see that Steele and Banwart are still sell outs to the children of Joplin. There was never any hope for Landis. They should reconsider and listen to the communities needs and wants. There is a storm brewing, once it comes over the hill it will be too late. Take heed, the people have spoken, they want Kimbrough in that seat.

And in the meantime, the changes desired by the voting public get put off even longer until the new member can be elected and seated. So far about all they've accomplished is the purchase of a $300,000 assessment package that will do more harm than good.

And Banwart nominates Huff's man. Typical and not surprising, but disappointing to see that she is still NOT listening to the people, but to CJ and her old man. I hope she doesn't run for her seat again, because it looks like she is asking to go the way of Flowers and Sharp. Maybe now that she won't have to protect her own children anymore she will go away silently and not do further harm to the rest of ours.

Kimbrough submitted petitions, with over 300 supporting community members, & yet, blatantly, this fell on deaf ears. The BOE "claims" to want to listen to the taxpayers, parents, district employees, students; yet, no one even opened up the envelope to see the 300+ Notarized signatures? What does the community need to do to "be heard?" Sign their name in blood....

The remaining "old" board members better listen to the public unless they want to go away also. Get Kimbrough back in there like the public wants. We don't work for Huff. Huff, Smith and Johnson work for us. It is now time to give us what WE THE PEOPLE ask for. Get Kimbrough back in there NOW!
