Jetton flashback: Speaker fights those who launch "all-out assault on family values"

At one point, after the unexpected announcement that Matt Blunt was not going to seek a second term as Missouri governor, former Speaker of the House Rod Jetton was touted as a potential candidate for the post.

After that green trial balloon was quickly shot down, Jetton, according to a recent series of Kansas City Star articles, built a powerful consulting firm that has dominated the Missouri Legislature.

With the announcement that Jetton has been charged with assault after an alleged bout of rough sex with a Sikeston woman, it appears Jetton's power and influence will take a nosedive.

One thing that always fascinates the public is the difference between the public words and the private acts. In the probable cause statement filed in Scott County Circuit Court, the Sikeston woman appears to be saying that Jetton drugged her, beat her, and had rough sex with her. This iw what Jetton said when he announced his candidacy for a third term in 2004:

As filing for public offices in the state of Missouri opened Tuesday, Representative Jetton of Marble Hill made his decision official to seek his third term in the Missouri House of Representatives. "I am proud to represent our district in Jefferson City and look forward to continuing to fight for our families here in Southeast Missouri," stated Jetton.

"As the Speaker Pro Tem of the House I been able to do more to help our district and the citizens who live here," continued Jetton. "Working to improve our schools, creating jobs and restoring traditional family values is something in which I strongly believe."

"During the last ten years, too many of our leaders supported bigger government, higher taxes, less liberty, greater regulation, and an all-out assault on traditional family values," said Jetton. "These are things we are changing today.

"While I am pleased we have changed the course of Missouri and replaced that big government agenda with one that focuses on lower taxes, reducing government bureaucracy, and restoring our traditional family values, it is important that we continue the fight."

"We cannot afford to turn back the hands of time," explained Jetton. "This year we have made progress by defending the Second Amendment, stopping abortion funding, and protecting marriage and the traditional family."

If the Sikeston woman's allegations prove to be true, it appears that Jetton has a strange idea of how to protect marriage and the traditional family.
