On the 45th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in America, thousands of pro-life Americans will march in Washington, DC during the annual March for Life rally.
The theme of this year’s march is “Love Saves Lives.” Truer words were never spoken. It can only be love that compels a mother, no matter what the odds, to strive for a better life for her child. It can only be love that gives countless couples without children the desire to adopt these children and devote their lives to them.
While the Supreme Court ruling 45 years ago made the practice of abortion legal, we must continue to do all we can to save as many lives as possible. Since 1973, it is estimated that over 59 million lives have been snuffed out due to a lack of compassion and love.
That is why, last fall, I supported, and the House passed, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Act which makes it illegal to abort a baby after 20 weeks – the time at which they are capable of feeling pain.
This week, the House will also vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act which I proudly support. This legislation ensures that any baby born, regardless of what stage of development they are in, is protected by law and is recognized as a human being.
Shockingly, there is no existing law that requires a doctor to keep the living infant alive. In fact, some abortionists have actually taken steps to end the baby’s life even after it has exited the womb. In other words, if a baby survives an abortion, the doctor could still take their life without any repercussions.
This important legislation changes that. Now, it will be a crime to take the life of a living infant who has survived an abortion. It will also be a crime for healthcare practitioners to refuse to provide adequate care to that baby. That baby must be immediately transported and admitted to a hospital to receive the appropriate care.
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is another important way we can guard the precious gift of life. However, more must be done to ensure that innocent lives are not taken so needlessly and heartlessly. Life is one of our most important rights and we must ensure that our most vulnerable, our children, receive the protections they deserve.
