Joplin COVID-19 death count rises to 28 with two more victims

Two Joplin residents have died from COVID-19, the Joplin Health Department announced in a news release issued this afternoon.

The victims are both men, one age 71 and the other 73, according to the release.

Just two days after Health Department Director Ryan Talken said the COVID-19 units at Freeman and Mercy were "full, but manageable" with 69 patients, the hospital census posted a record high for the second straight day, topping Tuesday's 74 total with 76.

Twenty-three Joplin residents have been hospitalized while 314 people are under quarantine. The number of active cases stands at 1,663 with 13 new cases confirmed.

(Note: The deaths were reported after today's statistics were posted on the city's COVID-19 dashboard.)
