Emanuel Cleaver: Democrats fighting to maintain Americans' health care

(From Fifth District Congressman Emanuel Cleaver)

As another government funding deadline rapidly approaches at the end of September, my colleagues across the aisle are following the orders of President Trump and refusing to negotiate a bipartisan budget with Democrats. Instead, they are attempting to jam a partisan Continuing Resolution (CR) through Congress that will continue their decimation of Americans' healthcare, as well as cuts to important programs that were previously negotiated on a bipartisan basis.

Not only would the Republican budget proposal permit the largest cut to Medicaid in history to move forward, which Republicans enacted earlier this year, but it would also allow the expiration of tax credits used by working class families to afford their health insurance premiums. According to one analysis, if the tax credits are allowed to expire, a typical 60-year-old couple making $82,000 would see monthly marketplace premiums more than triple, from $581 to $2,111 - an annual increase of roughly $18,400 for the household. At a time when Americans are already struggling to get by, this will only make matters worse. See how your family might be impacted here.

The number one thing I hear from families in Missouri is the rising cost of healthcare and housing. I cannot in good conscience support a partisan budget bill that will cause my constituents in Missouri to see their healthcare costs skyrocket - which is precisely what this legislation would do.

Moreover, as the administration continues to cut programs that were funded on a bipartisan basis, any budget bill must include safeguards that prevent the Trump administration from making more partisan cuts after a deal is struck.

It is important to remember that Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives. If they want to pass a partisan budget proposal, then the onus is on them. However, if Republicans in Congress want the votes of Democratic lawmakers, they need to come to the table and negotiate.

Democracy demands compromise. Before they force another harmful shutdown, my colleagues across the aisle must come back to the negotiating table and work with Democrats to craft a bipartisan budget bill that addresses the unsustainable rise in healthcare costs and meets the needs of our communities.

As the process continues to unfold, I will be sure to keep you apprised of the situation.

Obamacare - The Affordable Care Act (ACA) or AKA - Obama-I-Don't Care - has ruined Healthcare and the Insurance Systems. Yet the Dems celebrate it as though it would fix the Healthcare System of the United States but have turned America into Socialized Medicine ran by the Government and all it has turned out to be is another failed experiment of the Democrats. Costing the United States $Billions.

Twelve years ago, Democrats unloaded the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, onto the American people. Since then, the costs of health care and insurance have skyrocketed. Here are five reasons why Obamacare has been an utter failure:

1. Obamacare has increased the cost of health care and health insurance. The ACA’s federal mandates and spending, including Medicaid expansion and subsidized individual plans, have drastically increased the cost of health care and health insurance.

2. Obamacare increases Americans’ reliance on the federal government. …Democrats are attempting to… increase workers’ reliance on the federal government by moving them to exchange plans with higher deductibles, lower actuarial value, and narrower networks.

3. On a per person basis, Obamacare is far more expensive than anticipated for taxpayers. Employer-sponsored insurance provides better coverage and a better bargain for taxpayers compared to government-run health care programs.

4. Obamacare’s “expansion” is due in large part to improper Medicaid enrollments. In 2020, improper Medicaid payments totaled $86 billion, an increase of 21.4 percent. Most of these improper payments were due to eligibility errors. According to Dr. Blase, anywhere from 2.3 million to 3.3. million people are on Medicaid who do not actually qualify.

5. Obamacare is one step closer to socialized health care. Democrats are chipping away at our free-market health care system inch by inch.

Not sure what planet you republicans came from but Obamacare has been a lifesaving legislative victory for this country by making health insurance affordable to millions of individuals and families who otherwise, would either be uninsurable due pre-existing conditions or unaffordable due being self employed, large family, etc. You republicans are made in the image of your orange master: lack empathy, lack the ability to forgive, live in the white supremist bubble of hate, division, and suppression of basic human rights......yes 632 much like nazi Germany.

So then, why aren't the Republicans trying to fix the ACA? They have the power. Seems they need help coming up with a concept of a plan

We wouldn’t have to fix it if it was never screwed with, now it’s a colossal failure that keeps getting money thrown at it because all anyone will ever remember is it was the Republicans that canceled the health care and killed my family members because of it….
Go get you another Covid booster….

4:03 there is nothing affordable about it unless your leaching off the government to cover the cost,

Everyone remembers how republicans in congress blocked every attempt to provide for Americans. Trump and Congress gutted the ACA in 2017 which raised prices to their current level. Try again history revisionists. The GOP is the reason for high insurance costs

You have no memory of how much insurance cost before the ACA? If anything the ACA didn't go far enough with price reduction
