Eric Burlison: Republicans stayed firm during Democrat shutdown

(From Seventh District Congressman Eric Burlison)

The longest government shutdown in history is finally over, ending a bizarre stalemate caused by partisan brinkmanship that put politics ahead of the American people.

The House passed a continuing resolution on September 19, which would have funded the government through November 21, allowing time to continue the appropriations process for fiscal year 2026. However, over a 43-day period, Senate Democrats voted 15 times to block the clean funding bill that would have reopened the government.

Democrats chose to keep the government closed while demanding $1.5 trillion in new spending and attempting to extend COVID-era subsidies to prop up the failing Obamacare system. As a result, Americans, including our service members, bore the cost driven by partisan priorities.

Republicans stood firm, and in the end, eight Senate Democrats crossed the aisle to pass a funding bill that reopened the government through January 30, 2026.

Now, Congress must restore fiscal discipline through regular order – completing the 12 appropriations bills that ensure a responsible budget and put hardworking families first.

Dear Eric, If I correctly read your statement all it said was: Blah, blah blah blah. Blah blah blah! Blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah hard working families first. What a waste of intelligence to actually act like you're representing us.

I'm not sure what Burlison would be doing differently if he were actually an incompetent kook.
