Investigators with the Joplin Police Department responded to the scene and continued the investigation. Over the course of the investigation, information was obtained that some of the stolen items were inside a residence near the scene of the crime. A search warrant was obtained for the suspected residence.
The Joplin Police Department’s S.W.A.T. team, along with officers and investigators, served the search warrant at 908 E. Valley in Joplin. While serving the warrant, multiple individuals were contacted, including the primary resident Michael Hakala, 43, of Joplin.
During the execution of the search warrant numerous items that had been stolen during the American Construction burglary were located. Probable cause was developed and Hakala was arrested for felony receiving stolen property. He was then transported to the Joplin City Jail.
The Joplin Police Department wants to remind citizens that taking the time to make property personally identifiable increases the chances of it being recovered if it is ever stolen. Simple tips include marking tools or other items with a unique mark, such as initials or numbers. Also, ensuring that serial numbers and VIN numbers are stored in separate locations that are readily accessible to owners.
