Candidates' thoughts on education

Goodman- Sunset the federal education programs, along with the tax burdens that go with it and send it back to the state and local levels.

Moore- K-12 back to states There is a role for the federal government to pay for research in higher education. Federal government should have a role.

Eckersley- The federal government is a stakeholder in our children's education. I believe in "Race to the Top." We live in a global economy. Our children need to compete globally.

Wisdom- The federal government has no constitutional responsibility for education at any level.

Long- I would just as soon they do away with the Department of Education. We need to quit sending the money to Washington, D. C. and see how much they will filter back to us.

Wardell- We have way too much invested in infrastructure instead of paying for teachers.

Davis- I advocate greater autonomy for local school districts. I advocate an increase in the Pell Grant program , specifically for students going into science.

Moon- Choice of education should be parents' responsibility. Funding for Extension programs should come from state and local levels.

Craig- What we're hearing is the same thing we have been hearing from Roy Blunt (getting rid of Department of Education, other departments). You cannot trust the two major parties to cut government spending.

Nodler- I don't believe the United States government should regulate or control education at the federal level.

Where has Wardell been living? Another planet? In the most recent "Annual Report to the Community," Joplin Schools shows it spends more than 75 percent of the budget on "paying for teachers." How is that "way too much" for infrastructure?

Here's a novel idea (I'm not a candidate, but if I were, here's what I'd say) - we should scrap the idea that education is a local concern. Remove the burden of paying for it from the locals, who run corrupt school boards and have destroyed the credibility of education all across America. Make education a federal issue, 100 percent, and pay for it with taxes from all citizens in the income tax or a VAT. Standardize it, streamline it, make it something to be proud of, and have it supported all the way through the Ph.D. by tax dollars, with students required to pass exams to move on to the next level. Remove sports and all extras from the plan, and make it really education!!! Let the communities support sports teams and that sort of thing on the local level.
