Preliminary hearing set for man charged with assaulting Joplin police officer

The preliminary hearing for the man who injured Joplin Police Sgt. Rusty Rives by dragging him with his motorcycle is scheduled for 3 p.m. November 28 in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Paul Gilbert Haney, 19, Joplin, who pleaded not guilty during his arraignment last week. is charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer.

Haney is free after posting $5,000 bond and was already out on $20,000 bond on felony drug charges stemming from an April 10 arrest by the Jasper County Sheriff's Department.

The Joplin Police Department news release on Haney's arrest is printed below:

On Saturday, 08-27-2016 at approximately 1:00 AM, Sgt. Rusty Rives observed two motorcycles eastbound on 32nd St. from Wisconsin Avenue.

The motorcycles were going one-hundred and twenty-four miles per hour. (124 mph.) The two motorcyclists were recognized as subjects that officers had multiple interactions with, wherein they taunt the police in order to attempt to prompt a pursuit.

Later into the shift, Sgt. Rives again observed the motorcycles traveling north on Main St. from 32nd St. when Paul G. Haney drove into oncoming traffic at a southbound police unit.

Sgt. Rives waited on foot at 15th and Main St. Upon their return they were stopped at the light and Sgt. Rives, on foot, approached Haney.

Sgt. Rives attempted to take Haney into custody. Once Rives grabbed Haney’s hoody. He became entangled in it as Haney took off at a high rate of speed. Haney dragged Sgt. Rives several feet. As a result, Sgt. Rives’ shoulder was dislocated.

Sgt. Rives transported himself to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Multiple agencies, including Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Newton Country Sheriff’s Office assisted in locating Haney.

The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against Haney for Felony Assault on Law Enforcement and a warrant was issued with a $5,000 bond.

On Sunday, August 28, 2016, Haney was arrested by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

Why was the cop out of his car on foot waiting to grab him...sounds like some disciplinary action is in order and maybe a drug test for the officer involved since he was injured on the job

Paul Haney trivia: 19 and he has never kissed a girl.

*Two* motorcycles doing 124 mph. No arrest of the other idiot?

Dusty Roads: So he fumbled the capture, which emphasizes the risks any time things go hand to hand. As far as I'm concerned, he was trying to do his job correctly, perhaps came pretty close to an ideal capture, and the pain of a dislocated shoulder is certainly enough punishment for whatever mistakes he made. We weren't there, no one was seriously injured, I say some harm, no foul, let alone implications of drug use (?!?!?!!! where did that come from?).

The bigger problem is how are the police supposed to deal with these miscreants without resorting to lethal force, for any physical methods of stopping them while they're riding at high speeds would equal that. Then again, at some level, we can just wait for the figurative Darwin to take care of them....

12:04 PM: See above, but once one of these harms a officer, a Maximum Effort like the one that succeeded is worth it.

Definitely sounds like this cop was on drugs. That or he doesn't know how to completely shut down "ANY" motorcycle with a push of one button. Instead attempting to stop this guy he decided to grab him from behind as he left the light. A throttle pulls back and that's what makes it GO FORWARD. Grabbing a guy taking off that's not running from the law would throttle back and "ASSULT A POLICE OFFICER". Basically don't be hero in a lose lose situation. Motorbikes going 125mph, that's doable. Plus Missouri law states chasing a motorcycle to be unlawful because it endangers everyone around. Let the kid speed there shouldn't be many pedestrians out at 2am any who. Cops had there own fun chasing these 2 that's why it happend for 2 months.

This is stupid. You say running from cops at 124mph driving into oncoming traffic and they stopped at a light?? Common now that cop tried grabbing someone on a bike in a city where bike theft is high while he was taking off after SLOWING down and u expect the kid to know that?? The cop got hurt from being an idiot.. And if all u idiots posting on here would do your research as I have done you will see his so called felony drug charges are for marijuana and HE HASN'T BEEN CHARGED...

Amen.... The ones who endangered others was the police themselves... They too have admitted chasing them at 124mph through the city.
