Joplin mayor on state audit: We are proud of the results

(From the City of Joplin)

The City of Joplin thanks State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick and his staff for their thorough work on the 2023 performance audit. This extensive review involved thousands of labor hours and hundreds of thousands of records, ensuring the City’s finances and operational processes are efficient, accurate, transparent, and in compliance with all applicable laws.

The audit found:

NO fraud.
NO theft.
NO unlawful activity.

While the report included ten items with recommendations for improving certain processes, the City has already implemented many of these suggestions.

Most of the recommendations are focused on best practices, helping the City refine and strengthen its operational processes, financial management and transparency.

“This audit is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and professionalism of our staff,” said Mayor Keenan Cortez. “We are extremely proud of the results, which show our finances are secure and your taxpayer resources are safeguarded, in addition to having effective and efficient operational processes. At the same time, we are grateful to the auditors for their thorough review and recommendations, which help us continue improving. This reflects our ongoing commitment to transparency, integrity, and serving the public responsibly.”

Joplin City Manager Nick Edwards said, “We are very pleased with the outcome of this audit. We’ve even been told by people who work in the State auditor’s office that this was a good audit. That speaks volumes about the trustworthiness and dedication of our staff. Even better is the swiftness with which Council has supported implementation of the State Auditor’s best practice recommendations.”

To learn more detail about the findings and the City’s response to each, the City encourages the community to view the Mayor’s full video message responding to the audit findings.

If the mayor says he's proud of the state audit results he's either stupid or needs to resign.

He's doing a fantastic job!

Are these some of the left-over Auditors from the Joplin Tornado Era of 2011 that didn't recommend jailing our Mayor and Councilmen for their Illegal Schemes, Land Grabs, Insurance and Government Grant - Fraud?

Auditors don't make recommendations to jail people.

Auditors do make every effort to use proper capitalization and punctuation in their audit reports though.

1:57PM - As most unintelligent commentors need to learn the TRUTH AND THE FACTS - before they ASSUME SOMETHING - So Read and Learn - Then next-time - RESEARCH BEFORE COMMENTING - Makes you look SMARTER!!!

Yes, State Auditors can and do notify the police, especially if their audit uncovers evidence of ongoing criminal activity, fraud, or embezzlement - WHICH CAN LEAD TO JAIL.

The State Auditor's office will refer allegations and findings to the appropriate law enforcement or prosecuting authorities for further review and action. Cooperation with law enforcement: Audit staff will cooperate with law enforcement, including providing forensic auditing assistance in a case, according to the Missouri State Auditor's Office.

Referring serious findings: If an audit uncovers potentially criminal activity, the information is forwarded to the proper authorities as soon as possible.
Expanded powers: Some states are expanding the auditor's powers to include investigations and the ability to refer cases, which may also involve working with a prosecuting attorney or other law enforcement agency.
Differing actions for less serious cases: In less serious cases, the audit report may simply note the problem and recommend that authorities correct it, rather than immediately involving law enforcement.
