Online Jasper County Circuit Court records indicate that the 9 a.m. session will either be a pre-trial hearing or a change of plea hearing.
Smith's trial is scheduled to begin Wednesday, April 15, 2026, and is expected to take three days. Judge David Mouton is presiding.
A probable cause statement filed January 17 alleged Smith stalked a student beginning in her sixth grade year and for the next five years, including sending thousands of messages to her.
A search of Smith's work computer found child pornography, according to the probable cause statement.

Seems to me this activity is has totally out of control. I’m just wondering when we are toughening their sentences radically. When are we going to truly start caring about protecting women and children from these men? Don’t bother telling me no one knew for all of those years. Laws need to fit the crime, remember?? Sad and sick!
We need to make sure our judges, prosecuting attorneys, and even jurors know that we are tired of criminals getting away with their crimes and getting slaps on the wrists and backroom probation deals. Equal times in prison no matter the gender too, after seeing several female teachers get no jail time for similar crimes against minors is not fair either. “If you do the crime, you do the time, equal time.”
