Principals vote 13-2 to allow Joplin to enter Central Ozark Conference

Only one more obstacle stands in the way of Joplin being accepted into the Central Ozark Conference.

The conference's principals voted 13-2 earlier this month to admit Joplin, which would enter the COC as its biggest school.

The only votes cast against Joplin came from Republic and Bolivar.

If conference superintendents approve, Joplin will be part of the conference's large school division joining Branson, Carl Junction, Neosho, Nixa, Ozark, Republic, Webb City, and Willard.

Currently, Nixa is the biggest school in the conference, but its enrollment is 500 less than Joplin's.

My guess is that the principals don't mind having such a large school as Joplin join the conference because of the Eagles' poor, poor performance the past several years. Look up "underachieving" in the dictionary, and you'll see a reference to the Joplin Eagles. While some refer to the Joplin Eagles as a "sleeping giant," the JHS athletic program has been slumbering for way too long.

Joplin doesn't have the athletes, particularly in football and basketball.

Sorry to say but even baseball, once a Joplin strong point is decidedly average at best.

The Ozark Conference is the weakest large school conference in the state.
The COC is tougher than the Ozark.

Hard times will await the once mighty Eagles.

Isn't Carthage in the COC too?

That extra $95,000 in color matching seats should be worth a few wins every basketball season just due to the intimidation factor.

Can you imagine how the visitor's cheeks will be all clenched up tight as they sit in those beautiful seats? They will no doubt be talking about how at R-8 it is always for the kids!

Don't you mean Carthage instead of Carl Junction?

Carthage is already in the COC, CJ is joining next school year.
