The Joplin R-8 School District has reached a settlement over injuries that occurred during a September 23, 2024, bus ride, according to a petition filed today in Jasper County Circuit Court.
In the petition, the Strong Law Firm of Springfield, representing Clayton Brewer, acting on behalf of his daughter, listed as M. B., asks for the court's approval of a settlement that has been reached with the district.
The monetary amount was not provided in the petition.
The petition alleges the district allowed bus driver Heidi Patrick "to engage in reckless conduct by intentionally accelerating over known road dips, resulting in {M. B.} and other children being thrown fro their seats and M. B. sustaining severe spinal injuries."
The petition says Brewer believes the settlement is preferable to going to trial.
Under Missouri law, the amount will be public information once the court approves the settlement.

Is the school responsible for the payment , aka our tax dollars? Our will the bus driver be responsible for the settlement payment?
If you go into McDonalds and you fall and break your leg because an employee forgot to put the wet floor signs out and you sue...if you win do you think the employee has to pay?

I would like to know did the R8 School District Terminate the Employment of this Bus Driver, Heidi Patrick, and how did the School District - "engage in reckless conduct from her actions", I realize they are responsible for her actions and for hiring her, but it reads as though they condoned those actions? Since there are no seatbelts on School Buses - Drivers must treat our Children as the most precious cargo they will ever be responsible for. Also, just asking was she a DEI Hire?
