Joplin City Council member resigns, offers no explanation

The Joplin Globe is reporting that long-time Joplin City Council member Jim West resigned Friday.

Joplin city officials said West offered no explanation for his action.

Wext's seat was not scheduled to come up for election until April 2020.

The City Council is scheduled to meet 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

The City of Joplin issued the following news release:

Jim West resigned from the Joplin City Council yesterday. We thank Jim for his 19 years of service to the City and wish him well.

He served as a general council member during the following terms:
1988 - 1996; 2000 - 2004; 2006 - 2010; 2016 - February 15, 2019.

We do not know the reasons for his resignation and refer any questions to him.

The Council will discuss filling the opening at a future meeting.

Councilman West has done a great job for the many years that he has served our city. Joplin owes him a thank you for his countless hours and years of service. I do not personally know him, yet I met him years ago while I was still in college. He was gracious and treated me with respect even though he didn't know me. We need more people serving our community, state and country like Mr. West.
