Joplin doctor pleads not guilty to statutory rape, sodomy charges

A Joplin doctor waived his formal arraignment in Jasper County Circuit Court Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to felony statutory rape and statutory sodomy charges.

The complaint alleges that Dr. Jeremy Goins, 35, committed the crimes with a 16-year-old girl between February 1, 2016, and February 28, 2017.

(UPDATE: Goins' attorney expects charges to be dropped.)

According to the probable cause affidavit, Goins "began touching her above and under her clothes" in late February or early March 2016. "Jeremy would also rub the juvenile's back and kiss her stomach. Jeremy would also rub his penis on the juvenile's butt, while both were wearing clothes."

The affidavit alleges the abuse grew even worse. relating an incident in which Goins placed his sex organ in the girl's mouth and four or five occasions in which they had sexual intercourse, with the incidents occurring at locations in Joplin and Carl Junction.

The next hearing for Goins, who is free on $40,000 bond, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 7 before Judge Joseph Hensley.

Quick to judge readers! Articles like this are disgusting on behalf of the writer!!! You could kill this mans career. If he is guilty then write whatever you want!! Dr Goins is very well respected at his job!

I'd say this girl probably instigated it, led him on & he jumped at the thought, and when it got too much for her to handle reported him in hopes to get a little money because he's a rich Dr. I don't know the Dr or the girl, but I know many other Dr's & many other 16 yr old girls. I was 16 yrs old once...and how I would have loved to have had a rich Dr to spoil me at 16! I also know many 16 yr old girls who would love to have a Dr they could say they were dating to be cool at school....little do they understand there's alot more involved than just going to a movie and eating a bag of popcorn together.

To all the "kill the messenger" morons in here, Turner is not accusing the doctor of anything. Jeez, he is reporting on an allegation made in a legal affidavit, he did not file it, just reported it had been placed in the court's record. It will be decided at trial, of his guilt or innocence, not in a court of public opinion. How good a doctor he is has no bearing on his guilt or innocence. I'm sure he will be well represented, and if the prosecutor believes the child, then she should be well represented as well.

She must've ask for it.....I doubt he'd have gave it to her 5 or 6 times if she wasn't willing. Or it must've taken her 6 times to realize it wasn't what she wanted.....

This is unbeliveable. This man is very respected and takes care of patients on a daily basis! Innocent until proven guilty and in fact I could never see this man ever doing this! I don't believe it and never will.

So that makes it okay even if she wanted that type of relationship with him he is a grown ass man and should have enough self-respect and morals to say no you're 16 there are plenty of women out there his age that would probably love to have whatever type of relationship they can have with a doctor I don't care how respectable he is it's still bullshit

Minors are not willing. It is rape regardless of her verbal consent. We have these laws to protect children from doing things that are not in their best interests such as sex with a 35-year-old.

It is *always* the responsibility of the adult to disengage from a child who is attempting to initiate a sexual relationship.

I am shocked that people here would attempt to paint a child as being the one at fault in a statutory rape case.

Turner is an opportunist. And loves slandering innocent people! You sir are what's wrong with "journalism" someones life is a small price to pay for a story! Right?

My question is why did the girl keep going back if this was happening???O FYI I do not know this Doctor nor the girl....

Anonymous said...

If i see this bitch comment "she mustve asked for it" one more time lol. NO ONE ASKS FOR IT. NO ONE.

Anonymous said...

Legally, at the age of 16, she can't decide that for herself. Notice her name isn't disclosed. SHE IS A MINOR. Regardless of whether she "asked for it," or not, he should've known better. If their "love" was for real, he would've waited until she was 18.

Wait where was the parent or the nurse.
How was he allowed to do this when normally a nurse has to be present during exams

Shame on this reporter. Until further investigation you should not be so graphic if he's guilty lock him up but if not his career ruined by posting this trash people don't need to know about rubbing pens etc. You can get your story across without smut like your article. My brother was set up by a 16 yr old. After he was sent to prison and raped and beat she decided to confess she was mad at him because he dumped her aunt and was getting revenge for her.

Anonymous said...

Ha! I don't know what else you'd call it besides "asking for it ". I mean look at the big picture. It don't happen 4 or 5 different times or more in different areas and suddenly "not" be ok after all that. Sounds like she was OK with it, wanted it, and then realized she was getting in too deep and wanted out. The only way she knew to get out was to make a huge stir and ruin the Dr's career.

Anonymous said...

I agree. This is actually one of the best news stories I've read recently. It reported facts and left out any opinion or innuendo.

Anonymous said...

I agree! Now that everyone has judged and convicted him before he has had a fair trial, I hope that Karma bites you all in the ass! I happen to know a man who was on a school board and a girl accused him of malicious lies, causing him to step down from his position, and struggled to keep his business open. He maintained his innocence, and whwn the truth came out, the girl was lying, and her father had coached her into telling the lies against this man. His only sin, was having an affair with the girls mother, and the father wanted him convicted of being something that he was not, all in the name of jealousy. He was found innocent of all charges. Now then, you people who are so quick to believe the media, I hope you get what's coming to you.

It may be your right to write this and post it up for everyone to see, as there are many rights that we have as americans, however, does the fact that it is your right mean that you should do it? How would you feel if this all turns out to be a money grab and your blog post costs Jeremy his career? Who wins if this is the outcome? The complainant, Goins, or Turner?

BigD said...

"Jeremy would also rub his penis on the juvenile's butt, while both were wearing clothes."

Go back to 9th grade English class with this! Shakes head. Red pen. Comments in the margin: He could not have rubbed his penis on her butt if they were both wearing clothes!

Anonymous said...

Uh...no. his trial is still pending and Russow is guilty as hell. Total scumbag of a human. Never should have been on any school board!

Anonymous said...

Do you know how many people are arrested with mug shots then charges are dropped but no retraction from any news source? Turner is reporting what happened and there must be some evidence for a $40k bond? If The Globe or TV stations are not reporting it, shame on them!

Anonymous said...

Age of consent where I am from is 16 year old because girls by this age can intentionally ruin people this way and knowingly do it for the money, especially because they do not fully comprehend the full scale of their actions by falsely claiming such as this. I'm not saying she's lying or he didn't do it but by 16 years old. If you don't know what these kind of claims can do and result in then someone needs to teach their children Lil better. Just saying! And I wonder how she managed to meet him SO many times without someone such as parent/friends/etc...hearing about it. Girls gossip...sounds fishy.

When you put yourself in a position as a trusted professional in your community you HAVE TO seperate yourself from situations like this. He had no business hanging anywhere near a 16 yr old girl whether this article is true or false. This man destroyed his life by making bad choices so maybe (if this is false) he needs to seek another career because he lacks good ole' fashion common sense. Personally I think he did it just because a good minded man isn't going to pay any attention to that young of a girl unless he thinks he is going to get away with something... Prevoked or otherwise.

Anonymous said...

As you all defend the behavior as "she asked for it" and where were her parents......did it occur to you that this child may be related to the accused? Maybe his own child?

Anonymous said...

Perhaps he was being black mailed and after a year he said no more. Words are cheap and a kid watching law and order can get ideas. Problem is the accused is guilty before even bring asked. No judge wants the back lash for being impartial.

Janet, if you'd trust him with your children...especially a little girl, you're freaking nuts!!!

The comments on here are atrocious. And apparently some morons aren't intelligent to do math. She wasn't even 16. I don't know the story...and I don't care to at this point. He sounds like a pervert and I would never allow him to be my daughter's doctor, I can tell you that for damn sure!

I agree completely

Something seems strange about this. Why would local media not cover this and alert the community? His address on mo case net doesn't exist, either. Weird. If not for the letter to Randy from the attorney, I'd wonder if this was some kind of mistake. News of a doctor in town arrested and arraigned for statutory rape is news in my book. Why no radio, newspaper, or TV mention of this?

Anonymous said...

There seems to be a pattern developing here. Randy broke this story and there is no follow-up from any media. It was just a few weeks ago that Randy broke the story about Dr. Rosenschein, the former Joplin pediatric surgeon who is going to go on trial for child pornography. From the evidence that was presented, it appears likely Rosenschein was a bad egg when he was here in Joplin since there were reports about him before and after his time here. There hasn't been a word about either of these two stories in the Globe or anywhere else around here. What we may be seeing is a case of some Joplin power brokers exerting their influence to keep this information away from the people.

Anonymous said...

Whoever said his address doesn't exist, it does. I don't want to give much away as this is... quite close to me.... think of it this way, the street sign is as it shows on casenet, but it has an extra S on the end.

And he appears to have taken up residence there as a means to separate himself, possibly to protect himself from any other issues.

Or maybe her parents found out about it, or a school teacher (mandated reporter of such crimes against CHILDREN) and turned the sick piece of shit in for it? Even if she did give what she thought was consent, HE'S THE ADULT THAT SHOULD FREAKING KNOW BETTER!!! Where in America, is it legal for a CHILD under the age of 18 or even 17 to give consent? EVERY SINGLE ADULT KNOWS ITS CALLED STATUTORY RAPE when they have sex with a minor!

Anonymous said...

Missouri... in Missouri is where it is legal for a child of 17 years of age to give consent, the most common age is 16.

We all have every right to be alarmed, but let's not start throwing stones here, we have NO details of this case and have no right to judge.

Dr. Goins is a well respected doctor and a all round good guy and a great co-worker. He takes very good care of his patients and goes out of his way to make they are well informed on their care. This man is innocent. Anyone who works with him can see his compassion for the patients and his co-workers.

Anonymous said...

Being privy to the facts and a colleague of Dr. Goins, I can't help but feel disappointed mob mentality of our community. Anybody can make an allegation against an individual, but that doesn't give it merit. How would any of the people posting negative comments react if they were put into a similar presentation. I also find it borderline unethical for Mr. Turner to run with a story and include graphic language so as to sensationalize a story. A true reporter will at the least attempt to get both sides of a story. I also question how he was able to so quickly get this information which was not freely made to the public at time of publication. If it was me, I can promise that the reporter would be served with a defamation lawsuit once acquitted.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 12:11, Yes, anyone can make an allegation, but those allegations do not always lead to an arrest by the police department or to charges being filed by the prosecuting attorney. When charges are filed against someone, particularly against someone who is prominent in the community in some way or another, it is legitimate news. Reporters write about these kind of allegations all of the time. They are public record and there is nothing unethical about Mr. Turner or any other reporter not calling the doctor or the hundreds of other people he has written about who have been charged with crimes for a comment. Dr. Goins' denial of guilt was included in the headline, for heaven's sake. You also appear to be making an allegation that Mr. Turner was fed this information by someone with a grudge against Dr. Goins and that it was not available to the public. Any member of the public can go to the courthouse and have access to probable cause statements at the circuit clerk's office. I have seen Mr. Turner at the Joplin courthouse and assume that he is checking out these records since he has printed much information that is taken from these sources. Everything he wrote was taken directly from public record and he never said, not even one time, that Dr. Goins was guilty. He did not defame Dr. Goins' character. If this does turn out to be a false claim and charges are dropped, then perhaps the doctor has a claim against the accuser. All Mr. Turner did was to print legitimate news, something that so far the Joplin Globe has not done.

A person can be great at their job, compassionate, kind, and still commit illegal acts. People are complex and have different sides. Often-times, an abuser is someone who has some position of power or trust with regards to the victim.

While it is true that the individual in question has not yet been convicted and deserves his day in court, it is also generally true that they don't initiate charges unless there is some evidence.

I would absolutely agree with another comment that Freeman is either exerting its influence or the Globe/other media does not wish to upset Freeman.

And that is why our local media is so much BS.

If any of this actually happened is yet to be determined. Did anyone consider that this sexually active "child" may have misrepresented herself as far as her age?
And if she's so erotically knowledgeable, it might be that she had her childhood stolen from her by being sexually molested by a relative or friend of the family starting at a young age. What kind of an upbringing has she had or has she suffered through? Where were her parents when she was fooling around with a grown man if in deed she was? And I'm sorry but I don't regard "Turner" whoever he/she is to be an "author"-how laughable, more like a smut peddler who has the qualifications to work for the Enquirer or something of that ilk. What goes around comes around. . .there really is universal balance in this life so get ready "Turner" - shame on you. And much shame on the stone throwers too, you are a disgrace to the human race. pf (Voice for sanity in a difficult world)

I apologize Mr. Turner, you actually are an author, just so disappointed that you didn't have something better to showcase and highlight on your blog than this. People tend to become vultures, self righteous and holier-than-thou in highly charged situations - as if they have no sin or their sins are not as bad as someone else's. It truly brings out the worst in people while shining a light on the real type of human being that they are. God help us all. I still say shame on you stone throwers, who do you think you are? A little humility on your part would be awesome. Thanks for the opportunity to comment. pf

I see a few comments people have made about her asking for it, or they wouldn't have done it 4 or five times. I didn't realize that wasn't all ready understood. They were doing this for a year. it was consintual sex, if it was forced they wouldn't have used statutory rape which means consintual sex between an adult and a child that is not of legal age. It doesn't matter if she asked for it, or if she wanted it. The issue is she is a minor and he has no business touching her.
