Joplin City Council considering proposal that would increase pay for police, firefighters

A concerted effort to increase salaries for Joplin police officers and firefighters appears to be achieving results.

City Manager Sam Anselm unveiled a pay proposal to the City Council Monday night that would provide increases for nearly all city employees.

From KOAM's coverage:

As it stands, step one would bring everyone in line with a more appropriate salary based on time in their position.
To do that - someone with four years experience - would receive a six percent increase. Three years would see a four percent increase, and one year -would get a two percent increase.
Part one also introduces consistent two percent increases every year for employees - and Anselm told council, the city could afford it - and the plan is sustainable for the long term.
Anselm's plan also calls for an examination of pay in other communities, such as Fayetteville, Arkansas and Springfield and bringing Joplin into line and a possible readjusting of maximum salaries for those who have reached the highest point on the salary schedule.

If the City Council approves the plan, the first phase of the plan, providing salary increases for city employees, would go into effect immediately.

So why didn't they do this to begin with?
That Haase woman needs to GO.
And probably a few others.

I think the people who are willing to risk their lives to save ours should be first in line, always, for a pay increase, and their salaries should be much higher to begin with, considering that at the beginning of every day, they might not make it home to their families.

I wonder if they will cut the 4 man crew when they go on their shopping adventurer at the grocery store...I think a 2 man crew would be good

I think the proposed "pay increase" is a "no brainer" - and should better equalize the pay for "time in service".

I think it is a good idea to compare Joplin police and fire salaries with 5 surrounding comparable cities. When doing the salary comparison - 2 things must be taken into consideration (1) total salary compensation which would include salary and ALL fringe benefits - including pension and (2) the "cost of living index" for each comparable city. This way you are comparing "apples to apples".
