The Newton County Prosecuting Attorney filed a third-degree assault charge Thursday against a Lebanon man who allegedly punched a nurse assistant at Mercy Joplin August 20.
According to the probable cause statement, a CNA and behavioral health specialist saw Thomas Nathan Steyer (DOB 2003) approaching her as she was leaving the nurse's station.
She believed Steyer was trying to enter the nurse's station and she held up her hands to stop him. She stated Steyer punched her in the mouth with his right fist then walked away.
She stated she was willing to press charges. Steyer had been sedated and I could not interview him. Steyer had red marks on the first knuckle of the middle finger of his right hand.

A CNA is not a nurse.
I worked at the behavioral health unit at Freeman in Joplin . While there , I know of several staff members that were assaulted by a patient, but I can tell you from experience that although assault charges were filed , it goes no further than that
I know that and can't figure out how I put that in the lead and in the headline, when the probable cause statement makes it clear that it was a CNA. I have corrected it. Thanks for catching that. I appreciate it.
He had just been sedated. Charges will be dropped.
Hey dumbass, does it really matter? The guy could've punched a janitor and it wouldn't have been any different....
CERTIFIED NURSES AID WE USUALLY DO THE GRUNT WORK FOR THE LOWEST PAY IT RESLLY DORSNT MATTER HE HIT HER
No news, No charges will stick, And for future reference if you work in behavioral health field don’t be surprised when this happens….
What an a-hole comment
It seems like the patient could sue, he’s basically been exposed to the public for having behavioral health problems,AKA mental health
So because you may have mental issues that gives you a right to assault someone who tries to stop you from doing something I don't think so
When they went to interview him, he had just been sedated...I think it what it means, not that they sedated him and he hit her.
No it doesn't give you the right to hit them, but I think they are arguing a hipa violation. The patient must of waved his right to protected privacy when committing the crime.
Happens all the time wonder how long she will keep her job . Mercy loves to hide things under the rug.
I second this, after a indecent exposure incident by a patient I was told to not tell anyone or talk about it or I would face discipline up to and Including termination. Shortly after made up write ups appeared and I walked. Mercy doesn't want anything chance of dirt tarnishing their "spotless" name.
We are the eyes and ears for the nurses if it wasn’t for us the nurse would have to change briefs and give showers!!
When I work in Tulsa they had a guy tied down arms and legs and every time we untied him he would pull are hair and kick us., he would bit and spit on us! When patients are mad you approach them different.
Does it say he was a patient? I didn't catch that. Maybe he was a visitor going where he should not have been looking for something?
I worked at a home with 2 people there. They both had behavior issues. They would hit, kick, and pull hair. You can't do anything back. This was a mental issue. You can't hurt your patient..
I wondered if he was just sedated, why was he walking around? NOT very wise, he could have fallen.
