(From Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway)
The Joplin Schools audit was issued in February 2015 and earned an overall performance rating of "fair." The follow-up report, which does not include an overall rating, provides additional information on one finding, related to open meetings and compliance with the Missouri Sunshine Law.
"Transparency is crucial to government's ability to serve the people it represents and to allow citizens to provide input on important decisions that impact their communities," Galloway said. "The Joplin School Board has recognized this significance and since the audit report, it has taken steps to ensure meetings are adequately documented and results are made available to the public."
Under the new procedures, a board member takes meeting minutes during each closed session, using a template to ensure votes and decisions are made public when required. The minutes include all information that is required to be made public, and that information is posted on the district website, along with regular meeting minutes.
