Graves: No one is above the law, not even President Obama

(From Sixth District Congressman Sam Graves)

Our country is great because of legal immigration, not in spite of it. America is a nation of immigrants, and we are enriched and strengthened as a nation by our diversity. However, we are also a nation of laws and have a duty to uphold those laws. Amnesty rewards those who have cheated the system and punishes those who played by the rules in seeking the freedoms we are all fortunate to enjoy.

Recently, President Obama announced his plan to allow as many as 5 million illegal immigrants to remain in the United States. By refusing to uphold the law, President Obama’s actions amount to nothing more than amnesty by executive order. The President has disregarded our Constitution and the will of the American people by acting on his own, rather than with Congress.

To address this issue, the House of Representatives passed the Executive Amnesty Prevention Act. This bill reinforces that the President does not have the authority to exempt or delay the removal of immigrants who are illegally present in the U.S. – whether by executive order, regulation, or any other means.

We are a nation of laws and no one is above the rule of law – not this President or any President. The President should enforce the laws currently on the books and work with Congress to strengthen the defense of our borders.
