MODOT issues travel advisory through Sunday

(From MODOT)

With the threat of freezing rain and freezing drizzle in the forecast, drivers are urged to drive safely as they travel during this last weekend before Christmas. As temperatures drop below freezing and winter precipitation arrives, roads are expected to become slick.  MoDOT crews will make every effort to treat roads quickly, but won't be able to be everywhere.
Weather Forecast: Freezing rain is forecasted beginning Friday afternoon in areas along a line from Joplin to Warsaw.  Tonight, freezing rain is possible in areas north of the I-44 corridor.  Tomorrow, more freezing rain is possible in areas north of I-44 and heavy rains are expected south of I-44.  Saturday night into Sunday morning, snow is possible across areas north of I-44.
Road Clearing: MoDOT crews in affected areas will work to keep roads drivable whatever hours necessary Friday and through the weekend, hitting the busiest roads most often.
Travel Conditions: Rain can turn to freezing rain. Moisture already on the ground can freeze. That means driving conditions may change quickly. Bridge floors will be the first to freeze.
Be Proactive as a Driver: Check weather and road conditions before traveling. If ice forms on pavement, drive as slowly as necessary to keep control of your vehicle. Brake and steer gently. Leave plenty of following distance. Even with MoDOT crews out working where needed, widespread freezing rain or snow means roads may be slick.

More Winter Weather Driving Tips:
• Buckle up.
• Adjust your speed to conditions.
• Stay at least 100 feet behind a truck plowing/salting the road.
• Keep your windshield and other windows clear to help you see.
• Be alert for road conditions that may change as you drive.
• Don't tailgate.
• Focus on driving and avoid distractions.
• Allow for extra travel time.
