Global aerospace giant Boeing will add an additional up to 400 research and technology jobs at its St. Louis County campus, Gov. Jay Nixon announced today. This is the second major St. Louis jobs announcement this year by Boeing, which currently employs approximately 15,000 workers in Missouri.
"This latest announcement by a long-time Show-Me State employer is a sign that Missouri continues to attract high-tech jobs in high-demand fields," Gov. Nixon said. "Last year, Missouri had the third-fastest rate of tech job growth in the nation. It's clear that with our highly trained workforce, our continued investments in education, and our strong relationship with great corporate partners like Boeing, Missouri's economy will keep moving forward."
In June, Boeing officials announced a plan to bring 400 new jobs to St. Louis County as part of a plan to restructure its Research and Technology Organization. At the International Paris Air Show in June, Gov. Nixon announced that Boeing planned to add at least 400 IT jobs to its north St. Louis County campus, headquarters of its defense unit, as part of a global realignment of its 7,900 person internal IT unit, which handles a wide range of services for the company including fixing laptops to designing complex aircraft software. In total this year, Boeing has announced plans to create up to 800 new jobs in Missouri. The Governor said today's announcement furthers Missouri's position as a leader in the aerospace industry.
The new research and technology jobs will establish a research center focused on systems technology, digital aviation and support technology, and metallics and fabrication development. This new research center will support both commercial and defense business units. Missouri is also competing for production of Boeing's next-generation commercial aircraft, the 777X, and submitted its response to the company's Request for Proposal earlier this week.
The state of Missouri is helping this expansion in St. Louis County possible through a strategic package of economic incentives, which the company can earn if it meets strict job creation and investment criteria.
