Rep. Rowland offers rundown on special session

In a newsletter, Rep. Lyle Rowland, R-Cedarcreek, offers a rundown on the Boeing special session.

Greetings from your State Capitol on this 2nd day of December! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. It sounds like we are in for our first winter weather blast this week.

Governor Nixon called a special session of the legislature to start today to deal with his proposal to help entice Boeing Aircraft to build their new commercial jet (777X) here in Missouri. According to the facts given to us:

1. Boeing currently has 15 thousand employees here in Missouri.
2. The 777X Jet will be in production by 2018.
3. They already have orders worth $130 billion and they claim it’s only the beginning.
4. The project is not in competition with any other Missouri company.
5. The wing assembly could add an additional 2,600 jobs, at full capacity.
6. The fuselage assembly could add another 6,000 jobs, at full capacity.
7. The ancillary jobs created by this project could easily triple the numbers projected above.

The Governor’s proposal is to develop a package using four of the State’s existing programs:

1. Missouri Works
2. Missouri Works Job Training
3. Missouri Build
4. Missouri TIF

The bill would set a limit of $150 million per year in state benefits.

The bill will go through the Senate Committee and the House Committee before the entire House will vote on this proposed bill. We will be called back into full session between today and next Tuesday, December 10th. The 10th is the deadline for the State to act on this proposal.

I will write a follow-up report next week as to the outcome of such actions.
