Joplin business community message: We will buy the school board and city elections

For those of us who see serious problems in the management of the Joplin R-8 School District, the lead story in today's Joplin Globe sounded a warning that should not surprise anyone- the business community likes things just the way they are and is willing to spend big money to make sure nothing changes.

Reporter Debby Woodin revealed the existence of a new political action committee, Joplin Progress Committee, which, according to its website, wants the following:

"The ability to focus on policy, not politics or day-to-day management" of either the Joplin R-8 School District or the City of Joplin. In other words, if you are going to listen to what the people of the community want and try to do something about it, you are not going to be a suitable fit for the Joplin Progress Committee.

According to the Globe's story, the group has already had to change wording on its website that made it sound like contributors could buy access to public officials. One of the things that has been promised is that private meetings will be held between candidates and those who contribute large amounts to the committee.

The group wants to have a major impact on city and school issues, but says it intends to keep its meetings behind closed doors.

Is this what we want for Joplin?

Or is it just business as usual?

Birds of a feather flock together--and the city and district are joined at the hip.

Cannot be worse than what we have now..........
maybe this would bring some level of accountability?

i don't care a whit about what the rich boys want. They care about themselves and no one else. I'm voting for new people anywhere I can find them, or not voting at all. Enough of corruption and special interests.
