An impassioned letter from a Kansas City mother to Missouri Commissioner of Education Chris Nicastro urging her not to continue down the path toward privatization of the Kansas City School District was published today on the blog of Diane Ravitch, the best known defender of public schools and a former official in the Education Department of the first President Bush.
Ms. Nicastro has revealed her agenda through the State Board employment of the CEE Trust, a Bill Gates-funded group to explore how to rescue failing schools.
She also ignored the progress being made in the Kansas City School District by not agreeing to partial accreditation. Instead, she has opted for a group that advocates solutions that have not worked anywhere. The letter begins like this and is worth checking it out.
My name is Jennifer and I am the parent of two elementary children in the Kansas City Public Schools. I have been involved with KCPS since 2004. I am writing to you because I feel the voices of KCPS parents are being marginalized and cannot let this go unaddressed anymore. To me it feels as if more weight and value is being placed in the opinions of a small group of influential Kansas Citians (Civic Council, Kauffman and Hall Family Foundations) versus those of us actually utilizing our public schools; those of use who see and experience first-hand how changes which began 5 years ago are finally starting to bear fruit.
As long as Chris Nicastro is in charge, the fix is in. This state has fallen firmly in line behind school "reform" that has had no record of success anywhere.
