Only charge McDonald County prosecutor has filed against Meerwald is misdemeanor speeding

Two weeks after the Missouri Highway Patrol arrested Edward Meerwald, 63, Noel, for driving while intoxicated and speeding, the only charge the McDonald County Prosecuting Attorney's office has filed against him is misdemeanor speeding, though there is nothing to prevent a second charge from being filed.

Online court records indicate Meerwald was driving 16-19 miles per hour above the speed limit when he was stopped by the Highway Patrol June 17.

Meerwald spent time in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the July 30, 2004 deaths of Jessica Mann, 7, Joplin, and her grandfather Jim Dodson, 69, Neosho.

According to investigating officers, Meerwald, intoxicated and driving at a high rate of speed, ran his car off Highway 86 near Neosho and killed the two, who were standing in Mr. Dodson's driveway.

Meerwald was sentenced to seven years for each death, with the sentences to run concurrently, but spent far less time than that behind bars.

After his release, Meerwald petitioned to have his driving privileges restored. Judge John LePage signed the order on January 24, 2017.

Online count records indicate Judge LePage will be presiding when Meerwald has his initial appearance 10 a.m. July 30 - the 14th anniversary of the day he killed Jessica Mann and Jim Dodson.

Why no more charges? Why let LePage try this guy a second time and why is not in jail or posting a big bail? It looks like McDonald county system is back at work full time with the good old boy network of who you know. This guy probably needs to have one of those ignition locks on his vehicles from now on to prevent him from drinking and driving. Big cities do it and the felon pays for it out of his own pocket. Simple as 1 2 3

We have a really poor prosecutor in Mc donald cty.

Anyone saying Bill Dobbs is a poor prosecutor is simply ignorant. Dobbs is the best prosecutor McDonald county has had over a decade.

Bill Dobbs does just enough to get by and that's it. He let a guy that killed two young boys go Scott free. Money talks in Mcdonald County.

This man shouldn't ever have a car or access to one!
Shouldn't he have to go back and serve out the rest of his sentences? 14 years isn't long enough for killing a child and her grandfather. And not even serving THAT is insane.
He's obviously not going to stop.
He should go to prison and when he's out, he shouldn't even be able to use a bicycle.

It is the parole officer, not the Prosecutor, who initiates any action to revoke a former inmate's parole. So when the officer decides to file a parole revocation, it hits the court and the PA simultaneously. I have no idea if that will happen in this case, but Dobbs has no authority to revoke a parole on his own motion. Probation-yes. Parole-no.
