Trash costs to increase for Joplin residential customers

(From the City of Joplin)

Effective April 1, 2015, the Joplin garbage collection rate for residential trash service will increase from $12.41 to $12.85 per month. Trash fees are collected on Joplin residents’ utility bills from the City of Joplin that also includes their sewer service. The trash price increase will be reflected on all bills after April 1.

The price increase is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for water, sewer, and trash collection services and the transportation index, whichever is greater, not to exceed 10% per year, according to the contract between the City of Joplin and Republic Services. The CPI increase was based on the January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014 data that was 3.7%.

The Joplin residential trash customers’ rate to drop off bulky items, tree limbs, and tires at the Republic Services transfer station will also be adjusted using the CPI data, effective April 1, 2015. Persons with a utility bill reflecting the Joplin trash service fee, along with matching identification, may drop off bulky items for $7.08 per load (currently $6.82), or $14.14 if the load includes tree limbs (currently $13.64). The new fee for tire drop off is $2.13 each with a limit of five tires per trip (currently $2.06 each). Pricing is higher for trailers longer than eight feet long. Any load over 2,000 is not part of this subsidized program.

Hours for this City-subsidized drop off program at the transfer station are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a 30-minute closing for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon. On Saturday, the transfer station is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The transfer station is located at 1715 East Front Street (Old Route 66,) Galena, Kansas. Residents may call the transfer station ahead for more details at 620-783-5841.
