62nd U. S. Colored Infantry topic of Missouri State Museum program

Earlier tonight, Michelle Brooks, editor of the California Democrat weekly newspaper in Moniteau County, delivered a program on "In Search of the 62nd U. S. Colored Infantry" at the Missouri State Capital as part of the Missouri State Museum in Jefferson City's Museum After Hour series.

The men of the 62nd and 65th U. S. Colored Infantry founded Lincoln University in Jefferson City in the years after the Civil War.

Brooks is a Lockwood native and wrote about Lockwood school and sports events for the Carthage Press when she was in high school. Before becoming editor at the California newspaper, she was an award-winning reporter for more than 15 years at the Jefferson City News-Tribune, with many of her awards coming for her coverage of local history. Both the Jefferson City and California newspapers are owned by WEHCO Media.
