Jury trial set to begin Wednesday for Joplin man accused of breaking six-week-old baby's leg

A jury trial for a Joplin man charged with felony child abuse in connection with an abused six-week-old baby is scheduled to begin Wednesday in Jasper County Circuit Court with Judge Gayle Crane presiding.

The circumstances leading to the arrest of David W. Gordon, 26, were detailed in an October 11, 2017 Joplin Police Department news release:

On October 7, 2017 at 9:18 p.m. we received a call to Mercy Hospital in reference to child abuse. A 6-week-old baby had been brought to the hospital with a broken leg and other injuries that were consistent with child abuse.

An investigation began and the child was removed from the custody of his parents. After an investigation by detectives, charges were submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s office on the baby’s father, David W. Gordon, 24, Joplin, for abuse of a child. The prosecutor filed the charge with a $25,000 cash bond on 10-10-2017. This morning, detectives arrested Gordon for the charge and he is currently held in our jail.

The child, after being seen at Mercy, was transferred to Kansas City for treatment. He has since been released and is in alternative care, recovering. A 24-month-old female child was also removed from the parents’ custody and placed into alternative care.

The trial is expected to last three days.

I hope he doesn’t get a plea deal.

If he really does go to trial and is found guilty, I hope he gets a stiff sentence.
