Walgreens closing 200 stores, no word on Joplin area stores

Walgreens is closing approximately 200 stores across the nation, according to a filing Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Company officials said the decision followed "a review of the real estate footprint in the United States."

Earlier this year, Walgreens closed 200 stores in the United Kingdom.

The locations of the stores that will be closed has not been announced. The stores make up about three percent of Walgreens locations nationwide.

Walgreens has numerous locations in Joplin, Webb City, Neosho and other area communities.

There is a saying "find one on every corner" that Walgreens employees have said for years. And then CVS decided to place one of their stores on every corner. Why does Joplin have 2 Walgreens about 2 miles from each other? And why did pharmacies turn into shopping centers? Convenience and competition have become an American business model and I guess it isn't working very well.
