McKinley Elementary Principal resigns effective immediately, Barbara Cox hired on interim basis.

For the second time in the past four years, former North Middle School Principal Barbara Cox is being brought out of retirement to replace a departing Joplin R-8 principal.

In a letter sent to McKinley Elementary families Monday, R-8 Superintendent Melinda Moss announced that Brian Olivera (pictured), who has been McKinley principal for two years had resigned, effective immediately and Cox would be stepping in on an interim basis.

"While we realize this type of unexpected change can cause uncertainty, we assure you Joplin Schools values strong school leadership and we will do whatever is needed to ensure we find the best possible candidate to provide high quality continuous leadership for our wonderful McKinley community."

Cox was also hired as interim principal at East Middle School in January 2016 following the removal of Bud Sexson.

So, why did he resign? What happened? No details are given.

There's more to the story...
Why was his resignation effective immediately? He was the one involved in the school bus incident last year. Right? Smells fishy...

I don't blame him for leaving. Hope Barbara can change things.

Doesn’t even give his name, just a big shout out to the replacement. Curious about the reporting.

You may be curious about my reporting, but I am even more curious about your reading. I clearly name Brian Olivera in the second paragraph of the story and ran his photo, not a photo of Barbara Cox. As for the use of the name in the headline, there are a lot more readers who know Barbara Cox from her decades in the Joplin R-8 School District.

Was he asked to resign or resigned on his own free will?

He has more ghosts in his closets that most people have no idea about

I would like to know what is going on at McKinley Elementary. Regardless of what people thought about Jennifer Doshier, since she has left, McKinley has fallen apart. I never understood why people complained to me about McKinley. I never had issues until Doshier left. Then there were teachers that couldn't leave fast enough and the teachers that chose to stay one by one have since moved away. They are not old enough to retire, so what is the real story here? I can tell you that one of the teachers thinks she runs the school and that the rules don't apply to her and her little clique and another of the teachers is verbally abusive. Whatever is going on behind the scenes I strongly recommend to friends keep your kids out of McKinley if you can help it. Better yet stay out of Joplin schools all together .
